Reason
for playing: At
a young age I became interested in my dad's collection of jazz
records. Then I tried playing the violin at the age of 9. A year
later I picked up the trumpet, finally settling on the drums at
11. I enrolled in Wayne State University's Music program and played
in various Big Bands and Jazztets at the University.
Influences:
Buddy
Rich, Jack DeJonette, Steve Gadd. Miles Davis is my ultimate influence
and musical hero. It's his music and persona that was so unique.
He was always taking music into different and new directions.
Led Zeppelin was a big influence because my first drum teacher
use to have me transcribe John Bonham's drum parts beat per beat.
I also used to study with the great rudiment teacher Ken Mazur.
Prior
Bands: Orange
Lake Drive, The Fundamentals, Liz Larin. I currently have a jazz
fusion band with Chuck Bartels
and Matt Thibodeau called Hurm Sanford and another band called
Stunning Amazon. I also recorded with India
Arie.
Musical
Desire: To
play my own music, in my own band, with my favorite players, and
in the best venues!
Gear:
Yamaha
Tour Custom Drums with Yamaha hardware, Paste Cymbals. I prefer
Vicfirth SD10 Swingers sticks.
Currently
listening to: Joseph
Zawinul's new album "Places and Faces" and also anything
with Brain Blade on drums!
